What Is Kaolin Clay?
Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate crystalline mineral formed over millions of years by the decomposition and weathering of granite. It is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, it is characterized by its fine particle shape and chemical inertness.
Various processes are used by our supplier to enhance the properties of kaolin deposits. Kaolins can be airfloat, hydrous, de-laminated or calcined pigments.
We are able to source Kaolin Clay grades similar to those listed below:
Glomax-JDF
Glomax JDF is a is a fine particle dehydroxylated kaolin with a very closely controlled particle size distribution. Glomax JDF is designed for oleoresinous and primer paint systems where fast grinding and high hiding are required.
- Oleoresins
- Primer Systems
Glomax LL
Glomax LL is a dehydroxylated aluminum silicate produced by a controlled, high temperature heating of a water-fractionated kaolin. Glomax LL is the standard of the coating industry as an extender pigment in paint systems where high whiteness and good opacifying properties are required. Glomax LL finds application in both solvent and water-based coating systems as an extender for titanium dioxide and other prime pigments. Glomax LL, because of its medium-coarse particle size, provides good sheen control and excellent scrub resisitance. Glomax LL is used in polymers to provide stiffness, dimensional stability and good electrical properties. Because the product has been heat treated at a high temperature, Glomax LL also offers good heat and chemical resistance and a low moisture content. Glomax LL is suggested in applications such as:
- Interior Emulsion Paints
- Ceramics • Filled Polyamides
- Electrical Wire and Cable
- Traffic Paint
- Pharmaceutical Closures
- Mechanical Rubber Compounds
Hydrite Flat DS
Hydrite Flat DS is a non-pre-dispersed kaolin pigment having a controlled coarse particle size distribution. Hydrite Flat DS was designed for use in water based systems such as latex paint, adhesives, and is in the form of a fine micro-bead. Hydrite Flat DS has low water, oil and resin demand and because of this, HydriteFlat DS is found in a number of applications such as:
- Interior and Exterior Paint Systems
- Rubber Compounds
- Epoxy and Phenolic Molding Systems
- Adhesives
Hydrite PXN LC-S
Hydrite PXNLCS is a premium water-washed kaolin pigment ideally suited for a number of demanding coating applications including electrodeposition. Hydrite PXNLCS has undergone specialized processing to reduce the ionic contamination to a minimum. This results in a very low conductivity in aqueous suspensions. Hydrite PXNLCS is a new micro-bead product form providing ease of handling. Hydrite PXNLCS can be used in the following application:
- Electrodeposition paint
Hydrite RS
Hydrite RS is a spray dried, pre-dispersed version of Hydrite RS which has been lightly pulverized. The light pulverization improves the compounding in mechanical rubber goods without creating excessive dust. Hydrite RS has good whiteness and a controlled particle size distribution. Hydrite RS is also available in slurry format 70 +/- 1% solids. Hydrite RS is found in applications such as:
- Emulsion Paints
- Mechanical Rubber Goods
- Electrical Rubber Goods
- Bulk Molding Compounds
Hydrite RS-A
Hydrite RS-A is a non-predispersed kaolin pigment that has been water-fractionated to a controlled particle size distribution. Hydrite RS-A has a good whiteness, is free of coarse particles, and has a medium oil demand. Hydrite RS-A is in the form of a fine micro-bead. Hydrite RS-A finds application in paint, polymer and rubber systems where a controlled acid pH is required. Hydrite RS-A is foundin applications such as:
- Interior Emulsion Paints
- Primer Systems
- Universal Tints
- Water Base Adhesives
1201 Slurry
1201 Slurry is a pre-dispersed, delaminated kaolin produced from a water-fractionated feed with a carefully controlled particle size and platy shape. The plate-like structure provides barrier properties in many applications, such as good enamel holdout, stain resistance, and washability in interior emulsion paint systems. 1201 Slurry is suggested in applications such as:
- Interior Primers and Paints
- Exterior Primers & Paints
- Natural & Synthetic Rubber Goods
Kaopaque 10S
Kaopaque 10S is a pre-dispersed, delaminated kaolin produced from a water-fractionated feed with a carefully controlled particle size and platy shape. The plate-like structure provides barrier properties in many applications, such as good enamel holdout, stain resistance, and washability in interior emulsion paint systems. Kaopaque 10S is supplied as convenient, free flowing, spray-dried powder. Kaopaque 10S is suggested in applications such as:
- Interior Primars and Paints
- Exterior Primers & Paints
- Natural & Synthetic Rubber Goods
Metastar 501
Metastar 501 is a premium metakaolin produced by very carefully controlled calcination. It has been engineered with a high level of pozzolanic reactivity when used in portland cement-based concrete, plaster, and mortar. When MetaStar 501 metakaolin is used, it can react with the free lime by-product of portland cement hydration to form cementitious calcium silicate and calcium aluminate products, whichcan result in overall improved durability. Unlike other pozzolanic materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast-furnace slag, MetaStar 501 metakaolin will not darken white or gray cement-based applications. The use of this engineered metakaolinin mortar, cement, and plaster can increase chemical resistance, compressive and flexural strengths andcan reduce permeability. In addition, MetaStar 501 metakaolin can aid in reducing alkali silica reactions. MetaStar 501 is found in applications such as:
- Portland Cement Applications (e.g., concrete, grouting, and stucco)
- High Whiteness Type I Portland Cement Applications including swimming and pool plaster.
NeoGen 2000
NeoGen 2000 is a structured aluminum silicate at the vanguard of TiO2 extending pigments. NeoGen2000 has been engineered to develop maximum TiO2 extension over a wide range of PVC levels. The unique combination of particle size and microstructure both contribute to the high degree of opacity and tint strength achieved in coatings. The use of NeoGen 2000 typically enables development of formulations which achieve substantial pigment cost savings while maintaining existing film properties. NeoGen 2000is found in applications such as:
- Paint and Coatings
