Barium Sulphate

Barium Sulfate, Barite, Baryte

Barite (barium sulfate) is used in a variety of industries and applications, including paints and coatings, plastics and rubber, building and construction; sound deadening and friction.

Barite is a rather unique mineral having several key attributes that make it a valuable functional filler. These characteristics include:

  • Ability to be bright white and having high refractive index (1.65) for TiO2 Extension
  • Very Dense with a specific gravity as high as 4.4
  • Chemically inert – highly resistant to acids and base
  • Thermally stable with a melting point of 1580 C
  • Low abrasivity: 2.5 – 3.5 on Moh’s scale
  • Low oil absorption relative to particle size (one micron with oil absorption of ~ 15)

Properties of Barium Sulfate:

Highest density of any extender

  • Contributes to particle packing density, allowing more solids to be added to the formulation
  • Exceptional noise absorption & deadening
  • Excellent filler in anti-chip coatings
  • Contributes to improved adhesion

Extremely low solubility

  • Chemically inert
    • Not affected by acids or alkalis
    • Insoluble in water
  • Excellent filler in corrosion resistant and flame retardant coatings
  • Low reactivity with binders (extremely low magnesium & calcium oxide content)

Excellent dispersibility

  • Wets easily in all systems

Good scrub resistance

  • The wearing away or removal of a paint film

Improved mar resistance

  • The resistance of a material to abrasive action

Neutral pH: 6.0 – 8.5

  • Control of cross-linking
  • Agglomeration
  • Poor adhesion
  • Reaction times and set times

Refractive index: 1.64 – 1.65

  • One of the highest refractive indexes for a filler/supplemental pigment
  • Good tint retention
  • Improved hide
  • Higher surface gloss
  • Improved light scattering and reflectance

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Extender

  • (ExBar® W 1) can replace as much as 6% to 14% in some formulations

Thermal stability

  • Thermal degradation does not occur until 2,876°F (1,580°C) centigrade
  • Excellent in heat resistant coatings
  • Reduced compound stickiness
  • Reduction in die swell due to increased melt temperatures in extrusion

Excellent exterior durability and weather resistance (does not chalk or yellow)
Extremely low oil absorption: 6 – 12

  • Low resin demand and reduction in needed binder, resulting in lower materials costs
  • Higher degree of impermeability, resulting in lower resin demand

Low MoH’s hardness scale: 2.5 – 3.5

  • Grinds easily
  • Low abrasion
  • Minimal wear on equipment
  • Excellent sandability

Radiation blocking

  • Blocks gamma radiation
  • Does not block microwave

ExBar® HD 325, HD 400, HD 4, HD 3, HD 2, HD 200

ExBar HD is manufactured from a natural, buff-colored barytes ore, making it lower in cost compared to white barite ore. This is an excellent cost savings opportunity for customers who require high density, but where color is not critical to their process. ExBar HD provides excellent dispersibility, low oil absorption, greater thermal stability, scrub resistance, enhanced mar resistance and is chemically inert.

ExBar High Density (HD) features a minimum 4.35 specific gravity. Its low impurities ensure compounds will result in a more consistent finished product.

ExBar® 200, 325 and 400

Available locations – Houston TX & Dyersburg TN

These products are manufactured from a buff-colored barium sulfate ore. Strict quality control results in consistent products that are used in friction materials, primers, acoustical compounds, rubber compounds, adhesives, sealants and many other applications.

Barium sulfate used in weighting applications requiring a 4.2 specific gravity. This is a certified API product for drilling fluid applications required for heavy weight muds.
